Vehicle Hardware-In-the-Loop

In order to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability in road transport, driver support systems and fully automated intelligent transport systems are among the most promising developments on the market. Extensive development and testing processes are necessary to ensure that these systems are safe and reliable. Until now the full-scale road tests have been expensive, time-consuming and possibly hazardous. TASS International brings a radical change to this landscape. With its Vehicle-Hardware-In-the-Loop (in short: VeHIL) laboratory, we offer a unique environment for the development and testing of intelligent vehicles and transport systems; safely, cost-effectively and manageably.

" The results from radar sensor benchmarking in TNO’s VeHIL facility enabled us to make an objective selection of different sensor suppliers for our new Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system. Moreover, the PreScan sensor model that was derived from these tests allowed us to complete large parts of the algorithm development process by simulation instead of on the road. Fast and flexible route to development

The VeHIL laboratory can be seen as the missing link in the design and development of intelligent vehicle systems. It can handle any combination of system hardware and simulation modules to create a combined real and virtual system or traffic environment. VeHIL is a fast and flexible route to developing and evaluating your advanced driver assistance (ADA) development programme. VeHIL can be connected to simulation tools like MADYMO or PreScan to simulate with occupant injury, pre-crash testing, advanced design and evaluation of intelligent vehicle systems, and development & validation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

The principle

In evaluating the performance of intelligent vehicles, the test vehicle has to be subjected to realistic driving conditions like high speeds, tracking distances and traffic scenarios. The test vehicle is placed on a chassis dynamometer, a roller bench, able to simulate road behaviour via a simulation model of the test vehicle. Realistic vertical movements (accelerating, braking) are ensured through an advanced vehicle fixation system. Maximum speeds of up to 250 km/h with a realistic braking deceleration can be simulated.

The loop

The test facility also performs realistic traffic scenarios. Other road users represented by wheeled mobile robots, also known as Moving Bases (MBs). The MBs can be extended with a dummy body, resembling real passenger cars for radar, LIDAR and vision systems. By connecting both dynamometer and MBs to ‘the loop’, VeHIL offers quality, detail and effective testing for numerous intelligent ADA-solutions. And the VeHIL-team is continuously developing along the way. For example in fitting towards EuroNCAP legislation.

Vehicle-in-the-Loop test bench

The Vehicle-in-the-Loop (ViL) bench setup is for Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Collision Imminent Braking (CIB) systems, but can also be adapted for other ADAS applications. The ViL bench uses the PreScan software for scenario generation and sensor modelling, and includes both an ADAS ECU and a Toyota Prius vehicle as hardware-in-the-loop.
Using Vehicle-in-the-Loop systems we support testing the complete vehicle in a safe and controlled manner by injecting virtual sensor data into the vehicle.
